About this work
A historic view of the Mataf around the Kaaba in Makkah, taken around 1910. The image shows the courtyard of Masjid al-Haram filled with worshippers, with the former Shāfiʿī Maqām visible near the Kaaba. At that time, the Mataf still contained separate maqāms for the four Sunni madhhabs: Shāfiʿī, Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali. These prayer stations were later removed as the Haram was expanded and the courtyard was cleared for worshippers and tawaf.
