Illuminated Hilya of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

A Hilya is a traditional Islamic calligraphic artwork that describes the noble appearance, character, and presence of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Rather than portraying him visually, Muslim artists created a written portrait through sacred words, beautiful calligraphy, and delicate illumination. It is a work of love, reverence, and remembrance.

This piece follows the classical Ottoman Hilya format, with the text arranged around a central medallion and surrounded by rich floral illumination in gold and deep blue.

At the top, the artwork opens with the Basmala:

“In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”

The central medallion contains the famous description attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه:

“When he described the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he would say: He was neither excessively tall nor short, but of medium height among people. His hair was neither tightly curled nor completely straight, but between the two. He was not overly fleshy, nor was his face completely round, though there was a gentle roundness in his face. He was fair in complexion, with a slight redness. His eyes were intensely black, and his eyelashes were long. His joints and shoulders were strong and well-built. He was not covered with body hair, but had a fine line of hair running from the chest to the navel. His hands and feet were firm and full. When he walked, he lifted his feet with purpose, as though descending a slope. When he turned, he turned with his whole body.”

The lower panel continues:

“Between his shoulders was the Seal of Prophethood, and he was the Seal of the Prophets. He was the most generous of people in heart, the most truthful in speech, the gentlest in nature, and the noblest in companionship. Whoever saw him suddenly would feel awe before him, and whoever came to know him closely would love him. The one who described him would say: ‘I have never seen anyone like him, neither before him nor after him.’ May Allah send blessings and peace upon him.”

Around the composition are the names of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali رضي الله عنهم. A prominent inscription also reads:

“And sufficient is Allah as a witness. Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

A verse that beautifully connects to this work is:

“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.”
Qur’an 33:56

Style and Craftsmanship

This artwork is written in Jali Thuluth, a grand and highly decorative style of Islamic calligraphy often used for important devotional compositions. Jali Thuluth is known for its sweeping curves, elongated letters, strong rhythm, and elegant density, giving the text a majestic presence while still remaining graceful.

Here, the Jali Thuluth calligraphy is arranged in the classical Hilya format, with the central medallion holding the main description of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the surrounding panels guiding the eye through the rest of the text.

The deep blue background, gold illumination, and floral borders add warmth and refinement. The ornamentation frames the sacred words without overpowering them, creating a piece that feels both regal and intimate.

The result is a devotional artwork that brings beauty to a space while inviting reflection, love, and remembrance of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
